On the Verge of Summer

It's that most wonderful time of year again!  No, not Christmas, for us it's the very beginning of summer.   We're right there on the verge of the Summer of Fun 2011.  For us that means our first trip to the lake with some dear friends, an idyllic place where troubles melt like lemon drops and cabana boys appear to serenade you with some soothing "lake music."

Aaah!  Who cares if the water is still freezing and our foam noodles floated off across the lake?  It was plenty hot.  There was plenty of fish to catch, even if it may have been the same one on the line over and over again.  It's the thrill of the chase, right?  And it's always fun to hang with the homeboys, especially when they are super-duper-cool teenagers who are incredibly nice to include you -- or at least kindly tolerate -- your five-year-old antics.  We never hear about great boys like this, only the ones who give teenagers a bad name.  Well, eureka, they do exist!  I hope Sam grows into one someday, but not anytime soon.  I still can't handle the fact that he is almost six!

In the meantime Sam's friend Madelyn felt a little left out, but he was sure she'd love fishing if she just gave it a try.  Well, she's got all summer to drum up some interest because, as the Carpenters so aptly put it, "We've only just begun."

Happy Almost-Summer 2011, everyone!
