Sam's entire first grade class presented their Patriotic Play last week, and it was stellar. Of course I'm highly biased as one of the proud parents, but it really was stellar in so many ways. The kids all did such a fabulous job, especially the ones who had lengthly speaking roles! Gosh, to be six or seven-years-old and memorize all of those lines? Impressive!
It was also amazing how smooth the entire production went, a testament to the art teacher and first grade teachers who organized it all. They had the kids rehearse day after day for weeks on end, and it showed. The kids all seemed to be having a blast, quite confident in their roles. Gosh, the day before the real play the kids even had TWO practices. Those people deserve a medal or at least a strong mixed drink of their choice.
Each class had their own special song. Sam's class had "What Did Della Wear?" Such a clever and hilarious song -- surprised I had never heard it before then. Usually I am not into lyrics, but these are too good not to pass along.
What did Della wear?
She wore her brand new jersey.
What did Io weigh?
She weighed a washing ton.
What did Ida hoe?
She hoed a merry land.
What did Tenna see?
She saw what Arken saw.
Who has a mane?
It's north caro "lion."
How did Florie die?
She died of misery.
Who is Miss Issippi?
I don't know, I'll ask her.
Where'd New Mexi go?
To get a mini soda
Where did Georgia go?
To visit Louise and Anna
Why did Callie phone ya?
She called to say "Ha way ya?"
They had a slide show of all the relatives of the kids who served in the military. Whew -- there were tons, and the pictures were all so moving. I doubt there was a dry eye in the house.
And here is Sam's great grandfather, Jack McLaughlin, who was my grandfather and my mother's father. Don't worry -- there won't be a quiz on any of this material! :)
And here I am in Bosnia trying not to get too many paper cuts!
At the end they had all of the military people up on the stage to sing "God Bless America." It was such an honor to be included.
Let's hear for it the United States of America!
