We always hear about the bad teenagers in the news, the troublemakers who give teenagers a bad rap. Well, here is a story of some exemplary ones, amazingly kind and thoughtful high school kids. This can renew your faith in the "teenage race." ( I just made that term up.) They are the members of the cross country team at Menchville High School in Newport News, VA. On Saturday morning they ran a 5K in honor of their lost classmate. Joy Meyer was a rising freshman who passed away on August 1 after a long run. Unfortunately she had a rare and undetectable congenital heart condition. Known as "anomalous coronary circulation," it carries a risk of sudden death in children.
Here is the article in the Daily Press:
"They Ran With Joy"
Channeling their grief into something positive, the team all wore purple t-shirts (Joy's favorite color) with Joy's face on the front and a beautiful inscription about her on the back. And they wore purple bracelets that say, "We Run With Joy."
They ran with Joy.
Most importantly, they jumped for Joy.
The best line of the day was her mother Kim commenting,
"She would have been mortified by all this."
